The pharmacist's role
What to ask to the pharmacist
The World Health Organization defines a drug as every substance with natural origin, obtained by chemical synthesis or chemical semi-synthesis which, when introduced into an organism, modifies one or more functions.
A therapy is defined as causal when the drug acts on the causes of an illness, and symptomatic when it acts on the symptoms of the illness.
Drugs can be sold with medical prescription or without, in the case of self-treatment.
The pharmacist has to be well-prepared and up-to-date on types and uses of the current drugs on the market, including their interactions and side effects. When selling over-the-counter drugs, (medicines that do not require a doctor's prescription), the pharmacist should be able make an accurate diagnosis and suggest a therapy according to the symptoms described, also giving advice on suitable medication or sending the customer to a doctor for a more in-depth diagnosis.
