Homeopathy or homeopathic medicine is a term to indicate a branch of medicine defined at the end of 1700, by Samuel Hanemann, a successful doctor of traditional medicine in Vienna.
His many children were often sick and he was not able to treat them well with traditional medicine. This difficulty, together with unsuccessful treatments of various patients, convinced him to leave official medicine in a drastic move. He began producing medical products and, while studying Cullen's "Medical Material", he discovered that farmers of cinchona became ill with an intermittent fever strongly resembling that of malaria.
At that time, cinchona was used to cure malaria, but the doses had to be repeated and increased with serious risk for the health of the patient. After this observation, Hanemann began experimenting with the effects of cinchona on himself, discovering that the doses used caused a strong reaction. Based on this, he understood that dilution of the doses was needed.
These diluted preparations caused a variety of symptoms which lead Hanemann to state that if a substance can provoke certain symptoms in a healthy subject, it can cure the same symptoms in a subject who is ill, if administered in very small doses (microdoses).
Beyond this, he suggested the need to reinforce preparations to increase efficacy. Together with other physicians who had since joined him, he began experimenting with a variety of substances and medications on himself, noting in detail the smallest symptom or change in his body.
He continued in this manner for six years, during which he compiled a very accurate list of symptoms and intoxications, bringing him to apply the law of similitude. Attributed to Hanemann is the motto: similia similibus curantur. He worked with many clinical cases obtaining extraordinary results for that time, compared to those obtained by traditional medicine.
During his experiments on the healthy subject, Hanemann arrived at his remedies by reducing doses little by little, in this way avoiding toxic effects and developing therapeutic capacity at the same time.
Paracelso had already discovered the therapeutic capacity of medicinal remedies (the quintessential quality of a substance).
Homeopathy is a method based on the law of "similitude" and uses microdoses of highly "reinforced" drugs.
Hanemann codified the general preparation procedures which are still used today.
In 1810 he created what are called centesimals (CH, or dilutions of 1/100) taking one drop of a substance, diluting it in 99 drops of alcohol, and subjecting the solution to 100 repetitions, creating a second centesimal (2CH). The procedure was repeated until 30CH, the maximum dilution with which he experimented and prepared.
There are now decimal (D or DH) dilutions on the market as well, which were introduced by Hering (1800/1880), a German physician who immigrated to America.
Hering criticized centesimal dilutions citing too great a distance, according to his methods, between one dilution and another. Decimal dilutions could be administered in a better and more correct way with more appreciable results.
Dilution is widely used in Germany, thanks also to the work of H.H. Reckeweg (1905/1985).
In modern preparations, tablets and capsules of lactose and sucrose are filled with the remedy, rendering them reinforced.
