Introduction

Physiological supplements: Why?

Modern nutritional practices prefer to save health capital by optimizing daily meals. It is a reality however, that our food, regardless of its richness, has lead us to incorrect eating habits. Frequently we resort to pre-cooked, frozen, packaged meals and eat them in a hurry (if we don't skip eating altogether). We also tend towards simplified foods and frequently used ingredients that have often gone through processes of modification (for example, when the fat of skim milk is removed, lyposoluble vitamins are also lost). The paradoxical result is that, in this society of opulence, we run the risk of suffering from a deficit of micronutrients.

Physiological supplements: For whom?

When is it truly necessary to use supplements with their added vitamins, mineral salts, amino acids, fatty acids, etc?

When it is not possible to eat a balanced diet: for the difficulty of finding all of the nutritive substances necessary for the body, for the reduced ability to consume certain foods, because a restrictive diet is being followed, or for an exceptionally high daily need that is not satisfied by a balanced diet.

There are therefore, particular physiological conditions for which the food supplement is even more necessary.

ELDERLY

Loss of appetite and poor teeth are often found among the elderly, leading to poor chewing of food. There is also the problem of the skin being exposed to little sunlight, causing it to produce less vitamin D. For this reason, after 50 years of age, it is advisable to increase consumption of the vitamins in group B, vitamin D, selenium and Q10 to combat free radicals, vitamins to bolster the immune system, and amino acids, that can be considered the building blocks of protein.

SMOKERS

Smoke causes the production of free radicals and reduces the level of vitamin C. The quantity recommended for smokers is 100 mg per day, to be provided through diet and supplements.

PARTICULAR FOOD ROUTINES

Food supplements are recommended for diets, food intolerance, allergies, and vegetarian diets.

ATHLETES

Those who regularly practice sports need a vitamin and mineral supplement, as physical action exacerbates the loss of these substances and increases the number of free radicals that tend to damage cells. These are products of a normal daily life, but are accentuated in those who, with more muscle movement, consume 10 to 40 times more oxygen than a person who is sedentary. Some minerals, for example magnesium, ease the sense of muscle fatigue; others, for example vitamin E, increase resistance to fatigue. The vitamins of group B are also very important for an athlete, assuring the production of energy and the coenzyme Q10 that best metabolizes fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, transforming them into energy.

PREGNANCY, BREAST-FEEDING, ADOLESCENCE

During pregnancy and breast-feeding, the woman's body requires large quantities of iron, calcium, and folic acid. Calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and vitamins are necessary also while a child is growing.

WOMEN DURING THE AGE OF FERTILITY

Due to the loss of iron during menstruation, supplements based on this mineral can also be advantageous.

CONVALESCENCE, STRESS

Following an illness or surgery and during periods of convalescence or stress, it is advisable to supplement the daily diet with vitamins and minerals.

VEGETARIANS

Rigorous vegetable-based diets can provoke a lack of iron, protein, vitamins D and B, and calcium. A food supplement that covers this lack of daily nutrients may be necessary.

Probiotics for the harmony and stability of intestinal microflora

COMPOSITION - Each flavorless tablet contains: Bifidobacteriumlongum, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, equivalent to a total of 640 million microflora.
Does not contain lactose and vitamin B12.

Probiotics are good bacteria that live and work in our gastrointestinal track and constitute our first line of defense against sickness and disease.

Their value was first discovered at the end of the ninteenth century when Ukrainian scientist Ilya Metchnikoff (1908 Nobel prize winner for his studies on anti-infective immunity) turned his attention to fermented milk, wondering if it contained the secret to the longevity of Caucasian shepherds, regular consumers of this drink, a type of liquid yogurt.
His hypothesis was that fermented milk carried micro-organisms that could combat negative "rotten" bacteria.
From the idea of Metchnikoff, began a long series of studies that have continued until present day and the modern concepts of resistance to colonization and the benefit of administering micro-organisms to increase the ability of the body to resist the intrusion of pathogenic germs.
There is much proof to support this theory.
In the treatment of infective diarrhea, (which is the majority), support can certainly be found for probiotics through the consumption of live bacteria capable of postively integrating with the intestinal microflora. In recent studies it has been seen that, in children, probiotics are able to reduce by 66% diarrhea and side effects caused by an overload of antibiotics in the intestine.
Also in adults, if taken with erythromycin and other antibiotics, probiotics are able to mitigate undesired effects. Positive results have also been seen regarding food allergies and intestinal flora is of notable importance in the development of the immune system of newborns.
The consumption of probiotics is also a valid aid to those who are lactose intolerant (meaning unable to break down sugars into the two parts of which they are composed: glucose and galactose) who can introduce these milk-derived products into their diet and benefit from their nutritive properties.
Other studies have shown the efficacy of probiotics in the prevention of skin outbreaks from allergic eczema, in the reduction of disorders related to youth acne, and in the prevention of recurring genital-urinary tract infections (cystitis, genital inflammation).
In conclusion, a recent study has shown that among subjects who consumed milk fermentations with strains of lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacteria for three weeks, the white blood cells were shown to be stronger against Escherichia coli and there was an increase in the number of certain antibodies (IgA, immunoglobulin) directed specifically at Salmonella typhi.

What are the factors that disturb the harmony among intestinal bacteria?

There are many: stress, use of medicines that react with gastric acidity, menopause caused by hormonal modifications, aging, use of antibiotics, unbalanced diet, excessive consumption of alcohol.
In all of these cases, taking probiotics is particularly useful in reestablishing the balance of intestinal flora.
